#1 Scorpion Sting On The Back Of The Hand
March 2009
I was working on building a house moving lumber when a scorpion I had not noticed on the wood crawled onto the back of my hand and stung me. I flung it to the ground and proceeded to step on it killing it with my boot.
Instantly, I felt the effects of the venom and its associated pain. It quickly spread out to encompass the whole back side of my hand, causing not only pain but numbness and tingling.
Since I had done my research on envenomation in the 1990s, I carried a specific type of stun gun in my vehicle specifically for this purpose. I retreated to my truck and proceeded to stun the back of my hand, making sure that the prongs of the stun gun bridged both sides of the wound as I proceeded to discharge the electricity into my hand. I moved the prongs location to form an “X” pattern over the sting location and pressed the rocker button again delivering a second dose of the necessary voltage. Literally within a minute or two I could tell that the numbness and pain of the advancing venom had stopped. Then phenomenally it started to recede.
In about 15 minutes all the symptoms including the pain were gone and only the entry point in the skin was identifiable. I returned to the work I was doing. In about an hour I noted my hand was completely back to normal. Examining the back of my hand there was literally no redness, no swelling, no pain, nothing. I could not even identify I had been stung by the scorpion except that I knew I had. Definitely compelling evidence to the fact that this method of treating venom bites is effective.
